Introduction

In this last blog post I want to talk about my language learning journey which is basically how I managed to learn English. It was a very long and complex process and because I have been learning it since I was a child I might not be able to fully describe it. I will rather focus on things I remember and the things that might help you learn the language.

Learning English

I am still not quite sure how I learned English. As I mentioned in the introduction, it was a very long process. I would say the main reason I learned English the way I did are my parents. In early primary school they signed me and my brother up for the private English lessons. The lessons would then go on for many years and I think they gave me a lot and I am grateful for that. At some point I would also start to engage with English more on my own. I would find the English music I like, learn the lyrics and try to translate them, watch YouTube in English, read in English etc. For a very long time I used subtitles as it made it easier for me to understand everything but at some point, I decided to stop, and it was a great thing. Now I don’t need them at all. One of my friends also played a huge part as we used to chat in English a lot. The problem I have had not so long ago was that I have never really had a chance to speak English but since arriving here in Oulu, everything changed. I literally had to speak English, and it allowed me to make a huge progress. For the past few months, I have been using English a lot in my everyday life, and I feel like my communication skills improved significantly.

Summary

Learning a language is not a simple task. It requires a lot of time and effort but in the end, it is definitely worth it. Perhaps the best way to learn a language is to simply engage with it as much as possible, at least that is what I hear all the time, and it also seems to be true based on what I have written. I am definitely going to keep engaging with English and by doing so, keep improving it. That is all I have to say, good luck with your language learning!

    I really liked reading about your journey! Moving to Oulu and having to actually speak English every day clearly made a big difference. I totally agree that the best way to learn is just to stay engaged with the language as much as possible!

    Your post nicely shows how long-term exposure, supportive parents, and real-life use helped you learn English. Moving to Oulu clearly gave you the push to start speaking more confidently. Great progress!

Introduction This time I was tasked to read a book, something I would’ve never done otherwise, and write about it here in this post. I chose a book titled “Don't Make Me Think” by Steve Krug because the title caught my attention. I decided to see what it is about and after taking a look at it I decided to give it a try and read the first two chapters. Here’s what I have to say about it. What is it about In the first two chapters the author talks about how people really use the Web and why they don’t want to think while doing so. The author says that the design of the webpages should be straightforward and simple so that users know immediately where to click. Finland, blogging and learning English

About me My Information Processing Science studies story began a few years ago, though back then it was nothing more than a random idea. For some reason, I really wanted to come to Finland and one day I began to consider studying there. And so, for the past two years I’ve been working towards it.
