My language learning journey

Introduction In this last blog post I want to talk about my language learning journey which is basically how I managed to learn English. It was a very long and complex process and because I have been learning it since I was a child I might not be able to fully describe it. I will rather focus on things I remember and the things that might help you learn the language. Learning English I am still not quite sure how I learned English. As I mentioned in the introduction, it was a very long process. I would say the main reason I learned English the way I did are my parents. In early primary school they signed me and my brother up for the private English lessons. The lessons would then go on for many years and I think they gave me a lot and I am grateful for that. At some point I would also start to engage with English more on my own. I would find the English music I like, learn the lyrics and try to translate them, watch YouTube in English, read in English etc. For a very long t...

Don't make me think

Introduction This time I was tasked to read a book, something I would’ve never done otherwise, and write about it here in this post. I chose a book titled “Don't Make Me Think” by Steve Krug because the title caught my attention. I decided to see what it is about and after taking a look at it I decided to give it a try and read the first two chapters. Here’s what I have to say about it. What is it about In the first two chapters the author talks about how people really use the Web and why they don’t want to think while doing so. The author says that the design of the webpages should be straightforward and simple so that users know immediately where to click. The naming should be easy and the buttons that are meant to be clicked should look, well, clickable. The author points out a few reasons for this design. One of them being that people don’t really read pages but rather scan them. They don’t open the website with the intention of reading everything but simply finding what ...

Good old music video

Introduction Do you like watching music videos or maybe you just want to see an amateur struggle to create one? If so, I recommend you read this post as it might give you some insight into video editing and how fun but also difficult it can be. The project This time I was meant to write about my favorite project. At first, I was a bit worried as I couldn’t really think of any. That was until I reminded myself of one. The one that I still enjoy going back to from time to time till this day. And to be more precise – an AMV (Anime Music Video). The creation I created it over two years ago and it was actually the second edit I’ve ever made. I remember being inspired by one video I watched on YouTube where someone perfectly synchronized the video with music. I wanted to create something similar. I decided to use the song “Beat it” by Michael Jackson. It might be because I used to listen to it at that time. I also wanted the clips to match the lyrics of the song. Anyways, one day I...

Finland, blogging and learning English

About me My Information Processing Science studies story began a few years ago, though back then it was nothing more than a random idea. For some reason, I really wanted to come to Finland and one day I began to consider studying there. And so, for the past two years I’ve been working towards it. It was a stressful period as it was connected to my high school graduation and thus, I’ve had a lot going on. I ended up having to wait until July to know if I can really come here. But in the end, everything turned out well, though arriving here was only a part of success. Starting a new life in a foreign country alone can be very tough, and it took me some time to really settle down. And so, here I am, beginning the third period of my studies. Blogging The funny thing about blogging to me is that I’ve never really heard anything about it and thus I didn’t see the value it brings to the table. However, after reading an article about blogging advantages I can think of a few ways in which...
